DeSantis focuses on Democratic judges and prosecutors

Here is what’s going on: According to reports, supporters of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are working to elect fewer Democrats as state prosecutors and judges. A commission was established by the Florida Supreme Court in June to examine and perhaps redraft the state's judicial circuits. The appointed committee will present its findings and decide if Florida's court system needs to be scaled back.

Why it is important: The conservative court's commission is likely to recommend closing some courts in particular counties. As a result, the influence of progressive judges and prosecutors in the state's judicial system would be restricted.

  • Nationally: Bills to limit the authority of progressive prosecutors have been proposed in at least 17 states. Some measures would make it illegal for them to refuse to charge certain offenses, and other legislation would include safeguards that would make it simpler to dismiss unreliable prosecutors.

Catch up: DeSantis already dismissed two lawyers financed by George Soros for declining to prosecute particular offenses at the time this happened. The governor continues to take action against liberal authorities who are lax on crime in his state despite criticism from the Democratic party.

Zoom out: This approach would deal with the problem of soft-on-crime policies as well as left-leaning judges that unfairly rule against political rivals. DeSantis hopes to prevent Florida from adopting the progressive approach to the law by reforming the state's legal system.

Brief News

🎒 Liberals respond to unprecedented illegal immigration by saying, "Let them work." 1.6 million people have entered the country illegally since Joe Biden's inauguration, the majority of them are men of military age. Some businesses and media organizations with a left-leaning perspective advocate for issuing work permits to illegal immigrants. Young people are entering the workforce at a faster rate than older workers are departing, which has increased the cost of labor.

🎓 American citizens are becoming less confident in higher education. Only 36% of Americans, down from 57% in 2015, stated they believe in the value of a college education. Republicans saw the largest decline in confidence (from 56 percent to 19 percent) among all demographic groups, citing worries about politics in the classroom. Democrats make up the large majority of college academics, and many universities are adopting radical left-wing ideologies.

🇺🇦 The main line of defense for Russia has been "penetrated" by Ukraine. Although it still doesn't amount to a full breach, Ukraine is working to make it smaller in an effort to eventually reclaim around 20% of the Ukrainian territory that Russia currently controls. Given how slow the counteroffensive has gone thus far, this would represent a tremendous advancement.

🇹🇼 The front-runner in the race for president of Taiwan issues a warning about potential Chinese influence. The remark was made as Chinese military drills were taking place in the air and water around Taiwan. Lai Ching-te wished to emphasize that China's hostility, not Taiwan's, is the cause of the escalating tensions. Growing threats and potential interference may push China and Taiwan closer to hostilities.

BRICS growth: More nations Collaborate with China

What is going on: For the first time in more than a decade, the BRICS cooperation, which unites the growing economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has grown to include six additional nations.

Why it is important: BRICS summits could be extremely important in defining the future balance of power in the world as competition between the US and China intensifies.

Contrasting visions: As part of its efforts to establish an alternative to the U.S.-led global order, China wants to make the BRICS an adversary of the G7 group of developed economies. However, several BRICS nations, including India and Brazil, are U.S. allies and do not concur with that outlook.

  • Future Expansion: Discussing future expansion is one area where this division is evident. India is worried that China's desire to grow the group is simply a means for President Xi Jinping to include countries that support China.

  • How about the most recent additions? In 2024, members from Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will join. It is yet unclear if this action is intended to challenge American dominance over the oil market—a necessary first step toward realizing bigger anti-Western goals—or to address underdeveloped nations that are frequently ignored by the American-led system.

De-dollarization? At the BRICS meeting last week, the topic of developing a BRICS trade currency as an alternative to the US dollar received extensive discussion. It would necessitate the establishment of a central bank, among other enormous projects, thus not all nations could agree to it. The BRICS economist who came up with the name described the concept as "ridiculous."
