A federal investigation may result in the imprisonment of firm leaders, despite McKinsey having already settled on an opioid-related lawsuit filed by all 50 states.

🎓 Amidst instability on campus, the House Speaker paid a visit to Columbia University. Traveling to New York, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) spoke to a boisterous, heckling group of pro-Palestine students. Johnson and other supporters want the school's president to step down and give more information on the rising anti-Israel sentiments on college campuses across the United States.

🇨🇳 As the United States considers penalties, 🌨🌳 Antony Blinken travels to China. During a series of meetings with CCP leaders in Beijing, Secretary of State Antony Blinken attempted to persuade them not to back Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. President Biden recently referred to China as "xenophobic" and threatened to increase tariffs on Chinese goods, which coincides with this diplomatic visit.

🔎 Congress is requesting that the IRS look into activist groups with ties to China. The Chinese government or Chinese propagandists are connected to anti-Israel activist groups that have assisted in planning rallies on university campuses. Lawmakers in the US House are worried that these organizations pose a threat to national security and might even get funding from countries other than China.

Populist House GOP Faces Major Defeats

Here is what’s going on: Republicans opposed to the Ukraine war became a minority when House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) collaborated with over 200 Democrats to approve $96 billion in foreign aid, of which $60.8 billion went to Ukraine.

The division: Hardline While some Republicans want U.S. border security funding tied to such legislation, others are against providing further funding for Ukraine's conflict with Russia. Johnson is prepared to temporarily overlook the absence of border solutions because he considers thwarting Russian aggression to be of utmost importance.

• Trump's involvement: Johnson sought advice from the former president, who was successful in getting some money for Ukraine to be structured as a loan rather than as "just a gift." But the aid package is essentially a setback for the Republican Party's anti-Ukraine war faction.

Why is it important? Hardline Republicans have been railroaded on significant topics in a House that is razor-thinly divided. The GOP caucus is under pressure from Johnson's speakership as they contend with a more cohesive Democratic party.

• Regarding government espionage, Johnson assisted in the passage of a law this month that broadens the authority for warrantless monitoring, a move that Trump and his allies have long favored.

• Hardline government shutdown: Republicans have demonstrated a willingness to permit a government shutdown in order to exert pressure on Democrats to compromise on legislation. Johnson is still trying to avoid this, claiming that it will hurt Republicans in the elections scheduled for November.

Retaliating, some conservatives have threatened to call for a vote to remove Johnson from office, the same vote that ousted former Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as speaker. The unstable state of affairs increases the stakes for Trump's reelection campaign because a victory in November might give Congressional Republicans additional authority.
