Autoworkers' strike and President Biden's labor and climate politics collide

Here is what's going on: Over the weekend, thousands of employees from the Big Three automakers—Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis—went on strike. The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is negotiating for better benefits, including a shorter workweek and greater compensation.

For what purpose: The auto industry's shift toward the production of electric vehicles (E.V. ), which employs fewer people and imperils jobs, is at the heart of their walkout. Additionally, the workers demand compensation for growing inflation and financial crisis losses from 2008.

• California’s role: The pressure is increased by California's attempt to outlaw gas-powered vehicles entirely by 2035.

💉 The most recent COVID shot will be sought after by more than half of voters. What's at risk if the SCOTUS hears the online censorship case

Here is what’s going on: The Supreme Court halted an appeals court decision that forbade some members of the government from ordering social media companies to suppress content at the request of President Joe Biden's Justice Department. Last Monday, the appeals court ruled that the government had probably violated the First Amendment, siding with Republican attorneys general and other plaintiffs.

Why is it important: Although state-sponsored censorship is currently permitted, this also suggests that the Supreme Court might accept to consider the case. A federal decision would either put an end to or legitimize the federal government's use of online censorship, setting a significant precedent for free speech.

What's at stake: According to the plaintiffs, government agencies worked to censor comments on COVID-19, vaccine requirements, the Hunter Biden laptop story, and other contentious subjects, potentially affecting elections by stifling public conversation.

What do they believe? The Biden administration's decision to take the matter before the conservative Supreme Court, which has typically ruled in favor of free expression, hasn't been viewed favorably by everyone. According to the government, federal employees' right to free expression includes the ability to instruct IT companies on what content to block.

Here is what’s going on: House Republicans plan to conduct the first impeachment inquiry hearing against President Joe Biden on September 28th. The inquiry aims to investigate allegations of abuse of power and corruption by the President. During the hearing, lawmakers will assess existing evidence and provide updates on the inquiry's progress. The focus of the hearing will be on constitutional and legal issues related to Biden's alleged involvement in corruption and abuse of public office. This move comes after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy formally announced the impeachment inquiry into Biden, with key Republican figures like James Comer, Jim Jordan, and Jason Smith leading the investigation, particularly regarding Biden's alleged connections to his son's foreign business deals.
