Here is what’s going on: According to court and bank records obtained by the House Oversight Committee, President Joe Biden's brother, James, wired him money in 2018 on the same day a U.S. company paid James with the hope that "his last name could open doors."

Why it's important: Along with testimony and emails revealing the president was deliberately active in marketing the family "brand," the story adds to a fuller picture of influence peddling by members of the Biden family. More crucially, it disproves the assertion made by Joe Biden, his allies, and the media that he never directly profited from his family's business operations.

The Background: James Biden was sued in 2018 for unpaid debts that were made to him based on his assurances of significant incoming investments by Americore, a struggling rural hospital operator. The CEO and other executives claimed that because James was a Biden, he promised to provide Americore contacts and cash flow. The investments were never completed.

• The payment to James: Americore paid James in order for him to utilize "his last name" to "open doors" for the business and "obtain a large investment from the Middle East based on his political connections," according to the lawsuit, which James resolved last year.

• The payment to Biden: James transferred $200,000 to Joe Biden on the same day that Americore paid him $200,000 in cash. As a "loan repayment" to his brother, James noted it.

The wider picture: Republicans are trying to show that the First Family's financial operations during and after Joe Biden's vice presidency illegally impacted his leadership. This is the subject of a House impeachment inquiry.

Here is what's going on: According to a House impeachment inquiry, mainstream media sources are actively downplaying or ignoring controversies involving President Joe Biden's family and his son's international business dealings.

Why it's important: When former President Donald Trump was falsely charged with conspiring with Russia to win the presidency, journalists sang an entirely different tune. The corporate media continues to regard the allegations of collaboration as grave and alarming despite the fact that numerous Justice Department reports found no evidence and Hillary Clinton's opposition campaign had spurred the investigation.

When it's Donald Trump: For years, the Trump-Russia hoax was the top news story in America. It was meticulously covered and the subject of thousands of pieces. Even when publications relied on now-disproven statements from unidentified sources, new material was referred to as "stunning," "bombshell," or "damning."

When it's Biden, the proof of his criminality has been characterized by reporters as "thin," "unverified," or even "testimony [that]... appears to exonerate" him. Also according to outlets, Republicans have found "no evidence of wrongdoing." The investigations have, at the very least, supported the claim that Biden deceived the public about his connections to Hunter's business associates.

• Not even newsworthy? New information from the probes has not been covered by the biggest television news organizations in their broadcasts.

The state of journalism: The New York Times and Washington Post, two of America's most significant newspapers, both received a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of the Trump-Russia scandal. The collusion hoax is still being asserted as fact by certain journalists.

The U.S budget deficit doubled this year

Here is what’s going on: According to the Treasury Department, which made the information public on Friday, the federal budget deficit for 2023 increased by 23% to $1.7 trillion, putting the US in the biggest annual fiscal hole it has ever seen outside of the Covid era.

The financial situation is worse than the headline numbers indicate, however, when examined more closely.

• The $300 billion student loan forgiveness program of the Biden administration was recorded as a cost by the Treasury last year, but since it was overturned by the Supreme Court and never went into force, the Treasury now views it as a saving.

• By effectively doubling from $1 trillion in 2022 to $2 trillion in 2023, the annual growth has effectively doubled.

What took place? Lower tax receipts accounted for more than 40% of the deficit growth, while the government paid $659 billion in interest over the past two years, nearly double that amount.

Federal budget negotiations may become more contentious given the impending government shutdown and the deadlocked House's inability to pass legislation in the absence of a speaker.

Allies, however, might still receive financial support. With dropping inflation and a low unemployment rate of 3.8%, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen claimed that the US could "absolutely" afford President Biden's requested $100 billion in emergency spending, which includes military assistance to Israel and Ukraine.—DL
