TikTok sues US over app ban

Also, Israel advances into Rafah amid rising protests

The United States and the Arab countries offered Hamas a truce without Israel's involvement, just before Israel marched into Rafah with preparations to target the civilians along with Hamas in the southern part of Gaza.

This deal would swap hundreds of Palestinian detainees for 33 Israeli hostages, who Israel believes to be the only surviving out of 132 captives. The issue? As part of the agreement, Hamas promised to release the hostages' remains as well, not just the living ones. Nevertheless, critics and newspapers have presented the situation as Israel rejecting a cease-fire proposal.

Israel advances into Rafah amid rising protests

Here is what's going on: Protesters are calling for a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages, which they think would be compromised by a last military assault into Gaza, from the United States to Europe and even within Israel.

  • Catch up: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the agreement was "very far from Israel's vital demands" and that it was meant to stop Israel's military forces from entering Rafah, but it did not accomplish that goal. Hamas had approved a three-phased ceasefire deal that included the release of dozens of Israeli hostages.

Right now, in Israel: Thousands of protestors throughout Israel are calling for an agreement on a ceasefire in exchange for the release of the remaining hostages who have been detained by Hamas for seven months. Jerusalem protesters carrying a banner that said, "The blood is on your hands," marched in the direction of Netanyahu's home.

Also in Europe: Similar to what happened in the United States, university encampments are springing up throughout Europe, especially in Berlin, Amsterdam, and Vienna.

Scathing remarks: Congressional leaders on all sides of the issue have sharply denounced the antisemitism displayed at university demonstrations, as has President Biden.

  • Playing both sides: "Even in disagreements, my commitment to Israel's security, the safety of the Jewish people, and their right to exist as an independent Jewish state is unwavering."

  • However, as a political message to Netanyahu to stop his Rafah assault, the president has delayed a weapons shipment for the Israelis due to pressure from the Democratic Party's anti-Israel faction.

Why is it important? Whether a hostage agreement is reached or not, Israel is still totally committed to its genocide operation in Rafah. But as the conflict rages on, pressure to put an end to it, release the captives, and reconstruct Gaza has started to rise among Israel's friends.
