State of Florida’s Republicans Just Scored 2 Key Victories

Since Ron DeSantis took office as governor of Florida, the state has been a stronghold for conservative principles and values. And after winning re-election in a landslide victory the previous year, DeSantis and his fellow Republicans haven’t wasted any time implementing new legislation that is aimed to promote personal freedoms and American ideals.

In point of fact, the state GOP has only recently enacted two new legislation, both of which have direct repercussions for the educational system. In the Sunshine State, Republicans presently possess a supermajority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and Governor Ron DeSantis is swift to execute laws that have been approved. It is anticipated that he will sign both of these quite fast.

The first one refers to so-called diversity classes in higher education, while the second one stresses the importance of students’ rights to free expression in schools and not kowtowing to forced pronouns. Other suggestions that have been brought before the state chambers have covered divisive issues in the educational system, such as gender, racism, and sexual orientation.

As the first piece of legislation that was voted on and approved by the Senate this week, it prohibits employees and students in educational institutions from being required to use particular pronouns. This comes after legislators in some jurisdictions have considered making it a crime to use pronouns in an improper manner.

In addition to that, the law will prohibit the teaching of gender identity and sexual orientation in elementary and middle schools up until the eighth grade. Already, Governor DeSantis has indicated that he thinks it should be prohibited for students of all ages and academic levels.

In addition, parents will have the ability to dispute schools that teach lessons from books that are deemed unsuitable for children. Another piece of legislation that was passed through the House of Representatives prohibits educational institutions from using state or federal monies to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

It is the position of Republicans and other conservative leaders that virtually anything having to do with the DEI is inherently racist, divisive, and even hateful at its heart. They are of the opinion that it should not be included in education in any way, shape, or form. Last but not least, the bill makes it illegal for anyone to use public restrooms that are not associated with their biological gender.

Because Republicans have a comfortable majority in both chambers of Florida’s legislature, the Democratic opposition is in a difficult position because they are unable to effectively halt the passage of any of these proposals. And DeSantis is normally very supportive of this position.

These are the kinds of conservative beliefs that some voters are hoping Governor DeSantis will bring to the battle for the election of 2024; the well-liked Governor is widely anticipated to announce his candidacy very soon.
